Due to its steep volcanic shelf and its exposure to Atlantic swells, Fuerteventura has consistent powerful waves on the North and West coasts. The East coast gets wrap-around swells and has consistent wind-swell in the summer because of the Northeast trade winds. Winter is the best season for advanced surfers, with lighter winds and Atlantic storms bringing in quality waves, averaging about 6 ft. The water is warm, with winter temperatures still higher those in Europe in the summer, and you can surf in boardshorts/bikinis from June – September. There are waves to suit all abilities, from fun beach-breaks to gnarly lava reefs. The beauty of this island is you never have to drive far – it’s 15 mins from east to west coast beaches, and the North Shore between them is littered with lava reefs for all levels.
